How to Evaluate an AI Video Tool: A Real Checklist
Skip the hero reel. Judge an AI video tool on consistency, control, speed, and cost per usable clip. Here is the checklist I run before I trust one.
Evaluate an AI video tool on four things: consistency, control, speed, and cost per usable clip. Not on the demo reel, which is always cherry-picked, and not on a single stunning output, which any tool can produce once. The question is never "can it make one great clip." Every tool can. The question is "can it make the clips I actually need, repeatedly, in a workflow I can live with."
Here is the checklist I run before I put a tool anywhere near real work.
Does it stay consistent across generations
Generate the same prompt three times. Do you get three usable variations or one hit and two disasters? A tool with a low hit rate makes you burn time and credits culling garbage. A tool with a high hit rate lets you produce. Consistency of quality across attempts matters more than the ceiling of any single attempt.
Then the harder test: can it keep a character or style consistent across different shots? Make one subject appear in three scenes. If the face, the wardrobe, and the tone hold, you can make something longer than a clip. If they drift, you are stuck making disconnected fragments. How much control does it give the director
Can you specify a camera move and get it? Can you change one element without the model reshuffling everything? Can you set a visual style and hold it? Can you extend or cut a shot cleanly? Each yes is worth more than a point of raw prettiness.
A tool you can direct beats a tool that surprises you, every time, for real work. Run the boring tests, not the hero test: same character three ways, one variable changed at a time, a style applied across unrelated shots. Control shows up in the boring tests. This is the same reason I separate products built around the model from features bolted on, in AI native versus AI bolted on.
What is the speed and cost per usable clip
Do not measure cost per generation. Measure cost per clip you actually keep. A cheap tool with a ten percent hit rate is expensive. A pricier tool with a sixty percent hit rate is cheap. Multiply the per-generation cost by how many tries it takes to get a keeper. That number is the real price.
Speed compounds with hit rate. If each generation takes four minutes and you need ten to get a keeper, that is forty minutes per clip before editing. If the tool generates in thirty seconds, the same hit rate costs five minutes. Does it fit into a real pipeline
Can you get clean files out at the resolution and format you need? Can you feed it a reference? Does it hand you something an editor can use, or a locked preview you cannot touch? A tool that traps your output in its own player is a demo. A tool that exports proper footage is production gear.
Check the boring plumbing: export quality, file formats, how it handles longer projects, whether your work is portable. The exciting part is the generation. The part that determines whether you can ship is the plumbing around it. I apply the same scrutiny to every vendor in my evaluate an AI vendor checklist.
Run a real project, not a test drive
The final step is the only one that tells the truth: pick one real deliverable and make it end to end with the tool. Not a fun experiment. An actual thing you would ship. You will hit every limit, every friction point, and every strength within one project, and you will know more than any review could tell you.
Tools that survive a real project earn a place in the workflow. Tools that only shine in the demo get returned. Score them on the four axes above, run one honest project, and trust what you learn over what the marketing promised. That is the standard we hold our own tools to before they go near client work.
